We are so drawn to the work of Ralph Griffin and have been collecting it for years!
The first artist we ever started visiting and collecting was Rev. JL Hunter in Dallas. We responded to how he saw figures in wood and carved and painted them into existence.
Ralph Griffin took even a step further and drew the ghostly images from the natural features of a stump or piece of wood. He would add appendages or stands with a bit of paint to bring out the features, but his pieces make you believe in the living part of each piece of wood and the magical abilities of Ralph Griffin to bring them to life.
He was born in Girard County, GA, married at 22 to Loretta and they had 6 children living on the family farm until he was 30. He struggled to make ends meet and finally moved in to town and worked as second shift custodian at the Biscuit factory for 23 years never missing a day or even taking a vacation.
Ralph retired in 1989 and spent his last 15 years pulling wood from the nearby river area and bringing his pieces to life. Damn they are amazing!
