Eddie Arning was born January 3, 1898 in Germania, Texas in Austin County. He lived and worked on the family farm until he was thirty. As a young adult he began to show signs of mental illness with severe depression and violent episodes. He ended up in the Austin State Hospital, where inspired by Helen Burkhart Mayfield he used magazines as source material and crayons and pastels to illustrate advertisements and photos from articles.
