We followed the directions turn left at the big oak tree on to the dirt road lined with kudzu vines. We drove a ways and parked by an ancient log cabin. Burgess Dulaney 1914-2001 sat under a carport with his cousin Jot. Burgess was sculpting with mud he dug from a creek bank. He said the images come to him at night like they are projected on the curtains. Burgess lived on the same farm all his life never attending school. He said that when he was a boy; “he found Indian pottery in a creek bank”, this inspired him to make figures from mud. Some of his sculptures have striking similarities to the ancient clay figures found in Mexico.
