Dan
Phillips
We first met Dan when he visited the gallery. We had
similar interests and thus blossomed a friendship.
It was when we were helping Dan pack up
for a move to Austin that I first saw one of Dan's girl
drawings. It rocked my world and he was gracious enough
to pass the drawing on to me.
After that I kept up with Dan's drawings
and we began to show them here in the gallery. His drawings
are so detailed in their clothes and hair. Dan obviously
loves a pretty girl and good do.
But Dan never never ceases to amaze us
around here with his ideas.
He drawings have continued to grow in
their complexity; and he has recently dedicated himself
more to painting. His subjects have come to include
the many things which hold his interests, such as antique
carvings, ancient sailor artwork and emblems, tattoo
design, antique victorian mourning engravings and faternal
symbols.
In addition to his drawing and painting, Dan escaped
Texas a couple of years and is now is a cabinet and
furniture making graduate of North Bennet Street School,
Boston Mass. His beautiful furniture making is what
you find him doing most days.
His personal furniture style of design
mimics his artwork to me; with it's directness, grace,
and simiplicity yet both posessing such elegance in
detail, complexity and spirit.
In between all of the wood work, drawing,
and painting, Dan continues to play and create music
which he has done for most of his life. True Widow is
his current project for songwriting and creating sounds.
Around here we are looking forward to
November of this year of 2010, when Dan takes over half
of this big gallery space for a project encompassing
his passions of painting and wood working to create
one big Dan explosion.
